> By extending the water concession contract until 2037, Veolia will allocate investments to ensure access to water and sanitation services for over 99% of the population and reduce losses in the water network to a maximum of 20%
> This contract focuses on the implementation of depollution solutions, in line with the GreenUp strategic plan, and which contribute to strict compliance with EU wastewater treatment standards
> The investment program includes the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant to meet quality standards and European directives on water and wastewater, which will be more than 50% self-sufficient.
Apa Nova Ploiesti (ANP), part of Veolia Romania, and the Municipality of Ploiesti signed in May the extension of the concession contract until 2037, ensuring the continuity of drinking water supply and sewerage services for the inhabitants and strengthening the partnership of over 20 years. By extending this contract, the company will allocate investments to ensure access to water and sanitation services for over 99% of the population, reduce losses in the water network to a maximum of 20%, and bring it in line with European standards for urban wastewater treatment.
The investment program will focus on several key areas, such as the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant to meet quality standards and the European Water and Wastewater Directives. The construction and operation of the new wastewater treatment plant over a 12-year period will significantly contribute to achieving environmental targets, ensuring the protection of water, soil, air quality, and the environment, objectives aligned with Veolia Group's goal. Notably, the plant will be more than 50% self-sustainable. It will utilize the sludge to produce biogas, ensuring the development of a circular economy. This biogas will generate heat and electricity, meeting the plant's energy needs and reducing its environmental impact.
The extension of this partnership is further proof of the professionalism and expertise demonstrated for over 20 years by Veolia. We will remain just as committed to providing the citizens of Ploiesti with essential services of the highest quality standards at an affordable rate. By integrating new technologies and sustainable solutions, the concession contract is in line with the objectives of Veolia's strategic program - GreenUp 2024-2027, to accelerate the ecological transformation through the three pillars of action: depollute, decarbonization, and resource regeneration,
said Mădălin Mihailovici, Chief Executive Officer of Veolia Romania.
Improving the water supply system's efficiency will conserve resources and reduce energy consumption, aiding climate change adaptation and minimizing its impact on the population. Expanding water and sewerage networks will ensure more residents have access to essential services, eliminate septic tanks, and reduce the risk of groundwater contamination.
Implementing this investment program will enable compliance with all legal requirements, negating the need for additional investments by the Municipality of Ploiesti. The municipality will provide essential support, including necessary approvals, and will continuously monitor the program's progress through a Coordination Committee comprising representatives from both parties. Additionally, the tariff strategy will be approved by the Ploiești City Council and validated by the National Regulatory Authority for Public Utility Services.
